Guidelines and Application Forms

Q

The Guidelines state that eligibility is given to candidates of all nationalities who were born on or after January 1, 1988. Is there a minimum age limit?

A

No.

Do I need to submit a recommendation letter from my teacher?

A

No, you don’t.

Q

Is there any way to check if my application package of documents, DVD, etc. which I sent by post are received at the Secretariat?

A

The Secretariat sends an email message to acknowledge receipt of the application package.
If you do not receive this email message even 10 days after your submission, please contact the Secretariat.

Pre-Selection

Q

Violin Section: As to ①, we are asked to “select two pieces from the list below.” If I am going to choose Paganini, am I supposed to count all the Caprices (except for No.13, No.14, No.16, No.19 and No.20) as one piece to be recorded?

A

No. Please select 2 pieces to record from total 25 pieces that are shown in the repertoire list for ①. Below are some examples of combination for selection.

  1. Example 1: No. 1 and No. 2 of Paganini’s Caprices op. 1
  2. Example 2: No. 1 of Paganini’s Caprices op. 1 and No.2 of Wieniawski’s Ecole Moderne op.10
  3. Example 3: No. 2 of Wieniawski’s Ecole Moderne op.10 and No. 6 “The Last Rose of Summer” of Ernst’s 6 Polyphonic Etudes for violin solo

Piano Section: In recording a number of designated pieces for the Pre-Selection on a DVD or video data for upload, is it acceptable to do recordings on different days at several different recording venues?

A

Yes, it is acceptable.
( For the Violin Section, all pieces of the Applicant’s choice from the repertoire must be recorded on the same day at the same venue.)

Piano Section: In regard to the DVD to be submitted or the video data to be uploaded for the Pre-Selection, the Guidelines state that the performance duration must not exceed 45 minutes in total. Is there a minimum limit for the recording duration?

A

No.

Q

When I prepare a DVD for the Pre-Selection, may I record the pieces into separate tracks (not all the pieces in one track)?

A

Yes, you may record each piece onto individual track.

Q

When will the Pre-Selection results be sent out?

A

Results of the Pre-Selection are scheduled to be sent out to all the applicants by Monday, February 15, 2016. The result will also be posted on the official website of the SIMC by the same day.

Preliminary Round through the Final Round

Q

Piano Section: In regards to the Preliminary Round, is it acceptable to perform the same pieces which I performed for the Pre-Selection?

A

Yes, it is acceptable.

Q

If I am unable to register at the place and time designated by the Secretariat, is it possible for a proxy to register on behalf?

A

No. The Contestant himself/herself MUST register in person.

Q

Will the Secretariat provide opportunities to practice during the Competition?

A

The following practice opportunities shall be provided free of charge during the Competition.

  1. For the Piano Section:
    A room equipped with a piano for hours below, starting from the day after the Registration date.
    • Preliminary Round Contestants    Four hours a day
    • Semifinalists             Eight hours a day
    • Finalists                Twelve hours a day
  2. For the Violin Section:
    One rehearsal with the chamber ensemble prior to the Preliminary Round. As a rule, rehearsal time will be limited to 40 minutes.
  3. For both Sections:
    One rehearsal with an orchestra in the Semifinal and Final Rounds. As a rule, rehearsal time (including the briefing with the conductor) will be limited to as below:
    • For Semifinalists of both sections    One hour
    • For Violin Section Finalists       70 minutes
    • For Piano Section Finalists       80 minutes

Miscellaneous

I was told that an invitation letter is required at the time of application to obtain a Japanese Visa to enter Japan.

A

The Secretariat will send you an invitation letter upon request. It may take a while to prepare and send the invitation letter so please contact the Secretariat as early as possible.

How many applicants pass each stage?

A

The number of people who pass each judging round for each section is as follows:

  • Pre-Selection: approximately 36
  • Preliminary Round: 12
  • Semifinal Round: 6
