Olivier Charlier studied at the Paris Conservatoire with teachers Jean Fournier and Pierre Doukan, and received also illustrious support, as Nadia Boulanger, Yehudi Menuhin, Henryk Szeryng, Joseph Gingold. Follows a series of international rewards: Competition of Munich (ARD), Montréal, Helsinki (Sibelius), Paris (Jacques Thibaud), Indianapolis, New York (Young Concert Artists).

He is then invited by numerous international orchestras: Orchestre National de France, Orchestre de Paris, London Philharmonic, BBC Symphony, BBC Philharmonic, CBSO Birmingham, Halle Orchestra, Symphony Orchestra of Berlin, Het Residentie Orkest Den Haag, Nederlands Philharmonisch Orkest, Tonhalle Zürich, Philharmonic of Monte Carlo, RAI of Turin, Orchestra of the Foundation Gulbenkian, National Orchestra of Belgium, Tokyo NHK, Tokyo Philharmonic, Seoul Philharmonic, Orchestras of Montreal, Pittsburgh, Sydney, Mexico, Caracas, Beijing, Kuala Lumpur…) With conductors : Serge Baudo, Alain Lombard, Theodor Gushlbauer, Sakari Oramo, Yann-Pascal Tortelier, Michiyoshi Inoue, Marek Janowski, Armin Jordan, Pascal Rophé, Emmanuel Krivine, Gianandrea Noseda, Karl-Anton Rickenbacker, Lawrence Foster, Eiji Oue, James Judd, Yutaka Sado, Gustavo Dudamel, Jerzy Semkow, Charles Dutoit, Hans Graf, Klaus Weise, Michel Plasson…

His discography testifies of a great eclecticism: With orchestra, next to the concerto “L’arbre des songes” of Dutilleux that he recorded twice, we find works of Ravel, Lalo, Saint-Saëns, Mendelssohn, Mozart, Vivaldi…but also Gerard Schurmann, Marius Constant, Edward Gregson, Roberto Gerhard, Cyril Scott, among whom several world premieres.

The Marlboro Festival was for the young Olivier a revelation, and he is since a fervent chambrist. He played as a duo with Brigitte Engerer during 25 years, and now tours and records with his Trio Owon (complete Beethoven piano trios recorded for Decca). He participates regularly to numerous festivals: “Folles journées” of Nantes, Tokyo, Varsaw, Ekaterinbourg, Bilbao; Prades, La Roque d’Anthéron, Orangerie de Sceaux, Berlioz festival, Radio-France-Montpellier…

Olivier Charlier teaches at the Paris Conservatoire CNSMDP since 1992, and gives master classes in all continents. He regularly sits on the jury of international competitions (Indianapolis, Menuhin competition Austin Texas & Beijing, Paris, Hannover, Munich, Helsinki, Novosibirsk, Pamplona…)
