Shigeo Neriki gave first-prize-winning performances at the Biennial Piano Competition in Tucson in 1976 and the Three Rivers Piano Competition in Pittsburgh in 1979. He has performed with orchestras such as the Boston Symphony, Chicago Symphony, Pittsburgh Symphony, and National Symphony in Washington, D.C. Outside of the United States, he has appeared as a soloist with Orchesta Sinfonica Nacional in Mexico City, Radio Orchestra de France, and leading orchestras in Japan including the NHK Symphony. Since 1976, Neriki has collaborated extensively in concerts around the world with internationally renowned cellist Janos Starker. The duo’s 2009 recital at Kioi Hall celebrating the 30th anniversary of their debut was widely acclaimed.

As a chamber musician, Neriki has appeared in numerous concerts and festivals in Europe, Asia, and North America.

He received the 24th Suntory Music Award in 1993. The CD of works by David Popper that he recorded with Janos Starker (1990) was nominated in the soloist division of the Grammy Awards. In 1997, he received the Japanese Agency for Cultural Affairs Arts Festival Award for the all-Schumann recording “Papillon.” Neriki was a professor of Music at the Indiana University School of Music in Bloomington from 1981 to 2015.

Shigeo Neriki studied with Mieko Iimori, Masayasu Oshima, and Gyorgy Sebok. He is currently specially appointed professor of Toho Gakuen School of Music, visiting professor at Soai Gakuen, and Faculty of the Suntory Hall Chamber Music Academy. He also acts as Jury Chairperson of the Ishikawa International Piano Competition.

Shigeo Neriki’s wide-ranging activities include chamber music concerts and appearances with orchestras as well as recitals.
